Peopletown

After finding rents too expensive in the college town, I moved to the industrial-age Victorian town 10 miles away, where I bought that cup of coffee several weeks ago. Because of his busy teaching schedule, and my increasing anxiety, I needed to leave my friend's place. I have a very limited budget. The trip out here and Baxter's medical costs (despite the 80% reimbursement from the pet insurance company- minus deductible) devoured my savings account.

I looked for a few weeks to no avail and nearly lost hope that I could afford anything suitable.  But, I  rented a 2nd floor walk-up, with big, cheery windows and a cozy vibe, in a crooked old building. The kitchen floor slopes downward so much, that if you put the fridge on the other side of the room, the door swings open automatically. A good 2-inch grade. Good thing I'm not a heavy drinker. My friend's son donated a sofa, loveseat and area rug. Combined with a small table and chair from a thrift shop, and an air mattress, I have furniture. The thrift store also provided me with simple kitchen tools and dishes. Suddenly I have a new home.

Opening the drapes (re-purposed shower curtains) every morning reveals a bustling little street with a smoke shop, Dollar General, and a waffle and pancake place directly across the street. From these windows, I've spent many hours watching the locals as they park, walk, and run errands during the Holiday season. The smoke shop also sells lottery tickets, and the day after Christmas, quite a few happy fellows had scratch-off tickets in hand, as they jogged through the doors to collect their winnings. On that day, parking spots were at a premium, as the waffle place had a line out the door for brunch. The Dollar General customers enter, but take forever to leave the store, as the poor management from the bankrupt corporation never hires enough cashiers or stock-workers.

There will be a kitty, very soon, to take up residence in one of the windows. In fact, he may be here this afternoon. That will be my next blog.

Much love to you in 2020, as we begin again.
